THIS IS AKOMA : GET TO KNOW ME.

THE WHO ?

My name is Akoma, I am a daughter of the African continent. Yes, I won't precise the country, cause as a panafricanism believer and adherent, I don't want to limit myself, everywhere in Africa is my home. I am a multidisciplinary Artist based in Canada.

I write poetry, stories, draw and sing. Art is my passion and as an introverted person I always kept it to myself. Now I want to share it with the world through my own platform.

Some of my work will be for purchase for the art lovers and collectors out there. When the possibility presents itself, you will be the first to know.

Feel free to contact me by email for any inquiries, I will be happy to answer you as soon as possible.

The What ?

What can we expect from this blog?

Philosophy, most importantly ART because that is my passion, at times my whole identity.

Overall, you can expect to learn about my personal life experiences that got me to have a certain philosophy and psychology now.

The goal :

This blog aims to be informative, reflection based. It is the blog to get your dose of motivation, life lessons, laughters, art pieces and discoveries from my own creation to all the incredible artists I can phantom exist in this world but that you should most definitely get to know for their work and personalities.

The goal is always to democratize mental health in the black community, yeah, you can wish me luck on that. We have a long way to go, but I am optimistic and have stamina. So, I got it. We got it.

The goal is the give a voice to the voiceless. So often and now so naturally we have let the society tell us marginalized people that what we live is isolated but It is not. It is normalized and not taken into consideration.

The goal is see life from different perspectives, understand it and respect it.

The goal is to give myself and everyone that needs it some grace for whatever experiences they went through while still looking for the solution and accountability in said experiences.

The goal is to remember of our humanity and show compassion to ourselves and to one another.

The goal is to get the life we want, owning it and enjoy it.

THE WHY ?

Why do I start my first blog with such delicate subject ?

For quite simple reasons :

  1. I understood how short this life is, if we don't address our issues, the way we need and want to, nobody will do it for us. No, we are not, I am not seeking attention from anybody. I am seeking peace and justice in my own way. Which implies to point the elephant in the room, the root cause of the consequences that I now have to face on my own. On top of maneuvering life itself and its tribulations of young adults, should I add, young black and African adults ?! (Is it even a question to ask? Cause, Lord have mercy, we are living it... the attacks, discrimination of all sorts for simply being black ... and striving still.)

  2. I want this blog to be my journal for my journey (yes, it was intentional. I love words play ;) ), more so a testimony. Yes, "it is for the world to see and I am somewhat inviting people to talk about whatever I want which include the traumas I faced, people will talk and I won't all the time agree with them (great because I am not looking for yes people, still mutual respect needs to be in the center of all interactions, with that being said, if you found this blog article, you are welcome in advance!) and there is no problem at all if it is the case, I am not doing this for people but for me. Primarily. Now, if it benefits anybody to hear, listen or read about certains topics through my personal experiences and get something great or that can change their point of views or lives for the better , I am mostly likely to be welcoming them and honored.

  3. I don't want to live with regrets. And lately it has been recurrent. I have been regretting a lot of missed opportunities. The opportunity to fight back, defend or stand up for myself. There was the opportunity to just make my voice be heard and understood, even if at times, I still believe not everything needs to be addressed. I went by this motto. I kept my mouth shut but realized it should not have been all the time. Some people tried me on regular basis and got away with it, thinking it was okay. But no, I read and learned you teach people how to treat by what you tolerate and let slide. So to remedy this, shoot out to Katy Perry : you're gonna hear me roar !

Nice to meet you all, welcome to my universe!
